This past week I’ve realized some things. They are as follows:
1) Twitter is not essential to life.
2) As in real life, a lot of people on Twitter are jerks.
3) You should never, ever give a crap about who’s following you and, save for maybe a few people (#REDEYE WHATTUP WHATTUP), never be affected by people who ‘unfollow’.
At the end of the day, Twitter is a form of social media. The ‘media’ part is important because it separates Twitter from your normal face-to-face social interaction. People are more hesitant about being rude when they’re two inches from somebody’s face. People are more hesitant about being stupid jerks when they’re separated by 10 states.
I have proof of this because *I* am regularly rude on Twitter. You know why? Because nobody knows where I live, and I get to exercise the bitchiness I often want to exhibit in my real life. Also, where else am I going to get to call Dane Cook an unfunny hack or Keith Olbermann a…well is there even a word descriptive enough for what he is?
Getting down to my main point: in real life, if someone you associated with distanced themselves from you based solely on which Republican candidate you support, they would be a terrible human being. So many of my friends are Obama supporters—and you know why I tolerate this? Because there’s more to life than politics. Because people are individuals who are comprised of much more than who they plan to vote for (or even just talk about) in November.
But Twitter’s different. On Twitter, unlike the real world, you have the opportunity to live in a bubble. You can cut yourself off from all language you disagree with. You can, virtually, live in a place where the only opinions espoused are the ones 100% in agreement with your own. Is this the best way to use Twitter? Absolutely not. It’s nice to know the thought processes of people who differ from you. Keep in mind, I’m just talking about people who fall under the blanket of CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN. I’m not saying you should follow Obama drones just so your timeline is ‘diverse’. I’m saying you should be able to follow a Rick Perry fan while supporting Romney without blowing a gasket.
On Twitter, at the end of the day, you can create an environment that’s comfortable for you. For most of us, we’re comfortable having our opinions challenged or even mocked by other users. If you have a strong belief in your own views, you can handle criticism because you can DEFEND your views. Some people on the other hand never want to see their opinion challenged, either because they can’t defend their views or because they’d like to live the virtually fantasy of existing in a place where everyone thinks they’re, like, super smart and right.
Yes, I am referring to an event that occurred earlier this week, but I’m not going to specify for fear of being called an OBSESSIVE STALKER who can’t MOVE ON (yes people, when you react to name-calling, if you don’t just STFU you’re unfortunately a stalker. I know, it’s sad).
For clarity, NO ONE is obligated to follow anyone. The whole ‘follow back’ expectation is stupid, and if somebody says something that offends you, by all means, unfollow. You can even do one of those obnoxious RT’s with ‘UNFOLLOW’ in the front. But for people you’ve built up some sort of communication with—people you regularly RT or tweet with—unfollowing based on nothing but candidate support is sad and shows an insecurity in your own beliefs.
And that’s all I’ve gotta say about that.
Hehehehe.
Ok #redeye gang .. This video was made for me {and a few others, who don’t know I am posting it here so I expect my balls to be cut off later} by my friend @Im_bonafide {get to his Twitter profile here so you can cut his balls off too ladies} and I couldn’t help but make it a fixture here. If you don’t watch Redeye you may not get it, but then again you wouldn’t be reading this because you don’t get me either ..
Okay, say I stayed up ridiculous late last night, and it’s 2:30. I just woke up, uh…about 15 minutes ago (yeah, I’m a winner). So here’s what I remember about the NUTS dream I just had.
So I was on the island on Lost, and Hurley was there. He was BFF with evil Locke and Locke was all, “Hey Hurley, go over to that side of the beach.” Hurley went over and then some dude in a dragon suit was running around yelling and Hurley was all, “Dude, who are you?” and then the guy in the dragon suit took off his suit and started yelling. He had long blonde hair and looked like a viking, or something. Then he ran over some hill and then there was this whole tribe of viking-looking people just yelling and running around. THEN a bunch of them ran in the ocean to get some fish and Alton Brown was there trying to teach them how to clean their fish before they ate them, but they weren’t listening, and he kept looking at me and being all, “Nobody ever listens to me!”. Then Evil Locke came over and told me and Hurley that we had to go to that shady cabin from season 3 I think (?) and that “The Kardashians would be there.” So we went, and yeah, it was Kim and that big, less pretty one. Then we starting fighting and I remember Kim was like..on my back and I kept backing up into a wall really hard and then I woke up. Yup.
I promise I don’t take drugs.
I think we can all admit now after actually seeing the Tebow ‘pro-life’ ad that all of the angry fervor leading up to the Super Bowl was kind of ridiculous. Scratch that. It was *completely* ridiculous. Was that not the most non-controversial Super Bowl commercial you’ve ever seen? Mama Tebow’s sweet smile, sweet mother-son bonding…God, what was there to get pissed off about?
But “pro-women’s” groups were so outraged about the ad in the weeks leading up to it, you’d think it’d be something obscenely offensive. Women’s groups were concerned that the ad would discourage abortion & therefore negatively effect women and their own personal health, what with that whole, “Keep Ur laws off mi Body!” speil. The thing is, there ARE no laws anybody is trying to push on their bodies. Abortion is legal, and will always remain legal. What’s so flipping offensive about a woman encouraging other pregnant woman to seek an alternative mode of action?
See, the Tebow ad was not “anti-abortion”. Mama Tebow didn’t tell-off women who chose to abort their babies. She just simply wanted to show that women have the choice to keep their babies, like she did, in the face of difficult times. That’s ALL. I understand why people chose to be ‘pro-choice’…really, I do. But pro-choicers don’t really have anything to get upset about here, and they really jumped the gun with this outrage.
Which just leads me to another thought. Why is it when women present a different opinion that doesn’t involve abortion they’re labeled ‘anti-abortion’? In the weeks leading up to the Super Bowl all we heard about was this outrageous “anti-abortion” commercial. Why are women who find abortion acceptable labeled ‘pro-choice’ while women who personally don’t consider it an option for themselves are labeled ‘anti-abortion’? You’d never see a feminist (unless their super ballsy) go around saying they’re pro-abortion. Most politicians who say they’re pro-choice like to add “although I think abortion is horrible,” to that title. The Tebow ad was all about choice…the choice to not abort your baby. Why are all these supposed pro-womens groups so pissed off that women are being presented with more than one choice? It’s completely ridiculous and transparent. IMO, these ‘womens’ groups could really give a shit about women. At the end of the day, it’s really all about politics. Sad, huh?
For all of you who haven’t seen it, here’s the WILDLY CONTROVERSIAL (!) Tebow ad.
Here goes my first political blog entry. I decided I should probably stop whining about my life & write about what I’m popular on Twitter for- politics. Well that & my #pus finger. & stalking everyone on Red Eye. But I digress…
SO, anybody who cares about politics knows what a massive deal yesterday’s election in Massachusetts was. A *republican* won the senate seat, a seat that’s been occupied by staunch liberal Ted Kennedy for decades. Nobody in their right mind would’ve thought a state as blue as MA would ever go red, but it did, my friends. I think the key to Scott Brown’s victory is the fact that he didn’t run on his party- he went out there and connected w/ the people of his state, no matter their previous political leanings. Obviously if Ted Kennedy were still alive he would be retaining that seat for the number of years until he died, b/c MA loved Kennedy (for some reason…). But they also grew fond of Brown b/c he was personable & was running on things important to MA. & Coakley was the shittiest candidate the Dems could’ve *possibly* picked, but I’ll get to that later.
Usually during election cycles I like to watch Fox News, the only credible network remaining on television now, but after Brown’s victory was announced I felt curious & changed the channel to MSNBC. And man, what a laugh that was! At least try to *hide* your disappointment, guys! The first thing I see is Mr. Tingles himself, Chris Matthews, with a pained look on his face & his arms folded like an angry 5 year old who’s mom forgot to put a Snack Pack in his lunch. Rachel Maddow just seems…confused. Keith Olbermann looks depressed until a few minutes later in which he results to making teabagger jokes again, the only thing that can pull him out of the pathetic hole that is his life. Funny guy, that Olbermann.
Now honestly, I wish I could be a more helpful reporter as to what was said, but I can never stand Olbermann for more than 5 minutes, & that honestly has nothing to do w/ his political positions. Everything he says is just so hateful & immature. How that whole “Scott Brown is a racist, homophobic teabagger who supports violence against women” thing didn’t get him fired, I’ll never know, but yeah, the man is a sad waste of organs and tissue. Now Maddow I can at least listen to, and as I said, she just seemed confused. Somehow while trying to find a thread of sanity w/ Mr. Tingles she reasoned that this was a sign to Congress that the public wants them to be *more* liberal. *Seriously*? In her muddled, completely lost logic she stated that the voters are upset that Congress hasn’t moved far enough to the left and they’re taking out their frustrations by voting in Republicans. Sorry in advance for the language but…bitch has lost her mind. If I respect anyone on MSNBC I respect her (she’s the lesser of all the evils), and I do think she’s a reasonable person, but man that analysis makes no sense. All one needs to do is look at the polls. Look around our country. People are *not* happy with Congresss because there is NO bipartisanship. But of course, expect a change in 2010!
Why MSNBC can’t look at this election and understand why Brown won is a mystery. If they want to live whatever fantasy world tells them that this has nothing to do w/ the widespread discontent this country has for Congress, that’s totally fine. But *at least* recognize that Coakley was a horrible, horrible candidate! It was as simple as that- Brown was a good candidate, and Coakley was not. Will a Republican winning anything ever be acceptable to anyone on that network? Her record was flawed w/ mistakes, she was an obvious elitist, and oh, that whole keeping an innocent man in prison for years after he was proven innocent thing didn’t really help out much. But no…a Republican won! It must…it must be those fearmongering teabaggers fault! Or as it was reported, “The MA race became a personality contest.” Really guys, are you gonna play *that* one? Then tell me, what was the 2008 presidential election?
In the words of Andy Levy, I’m done.
